75% of Google’s New Code Is Now AI-Generated
At Google Cloud Next 2026, CEO Sundar Pichai disclosed a number that would have seemed implausible two years ago: 75% of all new code written at Google is now AI-generated, with every line reviewed and approved by human engineers. That figure is up from 50% just last fall, and it represents the largest-scale demonstration yet of what AI-assisted software development looks like at a company employing tens of thousands of engineers (Google Blog, April 22, 2026).
The statistic arrives as the AI coding landscape is consolidating around a small number of dominant tools. Anthropic recently disclosed that Claude Code accounts for 70–90% of new code written at Anthropic itself. Microsoft’s GitHub Copilot claims millions of active users. The competitive pressure prompted Google to form a dedicated “strike team” in early 2026 tasked with closing the gap between its own coding agents and Anthropic’s, according to a report citing remarks by co-founder Sergey Brin.
From Autocomplete to Autonomous Task Forces
The more significant signal from Pichai’s remarks is not the percentage but the shift in methodology. Google’s engineers are no longer primarily using AI as a code-completion assistant. They are “orchestrating fully autonomous digital task forces,” in Pichai’s words — firing off agents that plan, write, test, and iterate on software with minimal human checkpoints until a final review.
This is the distinction between first-generation AI coding tools and what is emerging now. Copilot and early Claude integrations completed individual lines or functions. Agentic workflows operate at the level of features and subsystems, navigating codebases, writing tests, handling dependency changes, and surfacing results for human sign-off.
The infrastructure required to support this at Google’s scale is enormous. Google’s first-party models processed 16 billion tokens per minute via direct API in Q1 2026, up from 10 billion tokens per minute the previous quarter — a 60% increase in a single quarter (Google Cloud Next blog, April 2026).
The Hardware Behind the Numbers
Supporting the agentic shift requires purpose-built silicon. At the same Cloud Next event, Google announced its eighth-generation Tensor Processing Units (TPUs):
- TPU 8t (training): scales to 9,600 TPUs and 2 petabytes of shared high-bandwidth memory in a single superpod; delivers 3× the processing power of its predecessor (Ironwood) with 2× better performance per watt.
- TPU 8i (inference): connects 1,152 TPUs per pod with 3× more on-chip SRAM than the previous generation, designed to run millions of concurrent AI agents at low latency.
The inference chip in particular is designed for the agent era: low-latency, high-throughput, and economically viable at the scale required when every employee becomes — in Google’s framing — a builder with an AI workforce at their disposal.
The Human Factor
The 75% figure does not mean three-quarters of Google’s engineering workforce has been made redundant. Pichai’s statement is explicit: every AI-generated line is approved by an engineer. What changes is the nature of the work: less time on syntax and boilerplate, more time on architecture, review, and judgment calls that models still handle poorly.
Whether that shift ultimately compresses headcount is a separate question. Google’s Gemini Enterprise platform saw 40% growth in paid monthly active users quarter-over-quarter in Q1 2026, suggesting the customer-facing AI business is growing fast enough to absorb productivity gains without immediate workforce contraction.
The industry is converging on a new baseline: AI-generated code is no longer a curiosity. At the two most advanced AI companies in the world — Google and Anthropic — it is the default.
